Okay so omg Ossë and I were just talking AND:
you know how I have that headcanon where the dragons are literally Melkor’s offspring. Right. You know this, you’ve been around here long enough.
And before now, I’ve said that they are JUST Melkor’s babies; little scaly parthenogenetic Vala babies.
BUT THEN: last night as I lay there in a cramped, stressed fever-dream as is my wont after drawing for 9 and a half hours, an idea came to me. And I thought:
What if the dragons start showing secondary characteristics that are… familiar.
Ancalagon: huge, spindly, the color utter darkness and void, who has too many eyes, too many legs, who drinks the blood of his prey only, who wraps them in silk and injects them with acids so he can suck out their nutrients.
Smaug: bright, Aulendur red; clever and cruel, with an affinity for fire, the houses of the dwarves, for riddles, and a deep abiding love of gold.
And then there’s Glaurung. I was stumped by Glaurung because he’s such a perfect little Melkor clone. I couldn’t think of anyone who could be a second source for him… I mean, who else has a personality almost identical to Melkor’s? Who does Melkor know who is as vain and terrible and headstrong as he is? Who is beloved of shiny things, vain about his frills and scales, who is weak to the stony, earthy associations of the dwarves, who is linked with elements of mists, and rivers?
WHO COULD THIS MYSTERY FISH PARENT POSSIBLY BE?
