“Where is the horse? Where the rider?
Where the giver of treasure?
Where the seats of the feast?
Where are the joys of the hall?
Alas for the bright cup!
Alas for the heroic warrior!
Alas for the splendor of the king!
How they have passed away,
Dark under night-cover,
As if they never were.”

crocordile: okay do you know what i’m thinking, i’m thinking dark queen luthien au where sauron turns, though it’s impossible to imagine, but i am imagining it anyway, good bye

// i see this and I raise u a dark queen luthien AU where she sings everyone in Angband into submission, takes up the iron crown, and makes both melkor and sauron her servants >3>“” Also it is a direct-to-video porn parody.

Okay now I’m curious. You find Luthien interesting for her abilities and for the fact she’s the child of a Maia and an elf, but what of Laume? I mean technically yes her mother is an elf that’s how Ossë and Uinen had her but Uine was still a Maia at one time.

I think her conception is an interesting conundrum of metaphysics and biology. Interesting, certainly. Beyond that, I think she is the daughter of an old, contentious friend (or friendly enemy? It is hard to say). Only time will tell which parts of her nature win over.

…I hope that was the full extent of your question, for my relationship with her bears no resemblance to that which I had with Luthien– hypothetically or otherwise. She is pretty as a bright shell on unsullied sand, as foam caught in the light of the setting sun; she is still a child, and I do not wish for any strife between us.

So what you’re saying is: *Throat torn out, pretty lady that just iicked your ass halfway to mandos practically steps on you and commands you to do things* -> Oh no she’s hot

I’m not above admitting what is true, and common knowledge: Luthien was a great beauty. And I am a man with particular tastes.

I was not remiss in my duties–  I would have killed her if necessary, or much more likely, held her for ransom in exchange for her father’s compliance, perhaps even the opening of Doriath.

But with the safe luxury of hindsight (and a healed throat), I confess that being ordered to submit by an assertive young princess with a fire in her eye and a certain, savage curl to her lips wouldn’t be so regrettable. What can I say? Sometimes the view from one’s knees is a thing to be treasured.

Dear Thû, how do you feel about Lúthien – any strong feelings involved?

*clears throat

Disastrous consequences of our meeting aside… I found her rather intriguing. She is, or was, unique, being the offspring of Maia and Eruhína. She seemed to care not for the rules of kings nor the aspirations of princes when she had her mind set. She followed her own way, with great audacity and clever use of her abilities. We might have had something to talk about, had we met under vastly different circumstances (I can hardly imagine how, or why, but this is all hypothetical to begin with), and had she not gone on to rob my Master.

But oh! What a figure! Praise the One for the rare gift that is an ample-bodied elves!

Shame about her man being in my dungeon. And that wretched, foul-toothed wolf-killer she brought with her…

Sauron’s Name in Numenor

anthropologyarda:

Coda to this post. Canonically, Tar-Mairon is the title Sauron used in Númenor, which means ‘King Excellent’ in Quenya.

But speaking elven languages, like Quenya, was against the law; the majority of the Númenóreans were strongly anti-elvish,

and Sauron hated the elves, so why would he use a title in Quenya?

Maybe

Ar-Pharazôn gave his adviser a special exception, but I think it’s more likely that Sauron actually used an Adûnaic

translation of his name.

So what was his name then?

We know that Tar- becomes Ar- in Adûnaic, but we have no translation for the second word.

Sauron’s original name was Mairon, from Q maira
“admirable, excellent, precious, splendid, sublime”.

Adûnaic simplifies ai into long ê, giving us the loan word mêra

If we add the adjective ending -ôn, we get the noun mêraôn, “admirable one,” similar to pharazôn “golden one.” But I’m doubtful this an acceptable or pronounceable vowel cluster in Adûnaic.

We could alter it by dropping the first vowel to form Mêrôn. Or we could add a glide consonant y to make Mêrayôn, like in the word Avalôiyada.

So possible

Adûnaic

names for Sauron are Ar-Mêrôn

and Ar-Mêrayôn.
