I’m so curious as to how SoM:SoW is going to justify making Isildur a wraith; why and how would he be enslaved after death? And why, however it happens, would he not just tell Sauron things like “welp, this is the spot where I died, probably that’s where the Ring went”.

At this point in these games, does anything have any logical reasoning behind it?

yes! At least, I think so? XD They’re choosing from among the available Notable Dead Humans in the trilogy who might have sufficiently wraithy motivations to be enthralled by (usually vengeance). The in-game ‘headcanon’ they mentioned was that Isildur’s body was never found, and given his connection with the One Ring, his was a personal revenge case for Sauron. Presumably he was forcibly wraithified, they didn’t say HOW he was wraithified (by ring or by necromancy or blood sacrifice similar to Talion’s, or what have you).

XD My default position for SoM is one of EXTREME LENIENCE  because damn if they aren’t doing the best they can with those insane copyright restrictions in place. I’m just curious if they’re going to close some of the obvious loopholes, or if they’re just going to tell us to roll with it because it’s a cool call-back.

There’s a very interesting angle to the use of Shelob in Shadow of War. In addition to making her spirit able to see “the web of fate” like a more honest, if evil, Galadriel, her story seems to echo that of Ungoliant. Just like she craved the light of the Silmarils made by Celebrimbor’s grandfather, so too does Shelob hunger for the light of this new Ring.

These half-retellings of old stories abound in the adaptations of Tolkien’s work. Thranduil’s story in the Hobbit films echoes that of Thingol’s obsession with the Nauglamir. The new Shadow of War uses the Nazgul Suladân as a stand-in for Ar-Pharazon and how he took Sauron captive and fell to his seduction.

It’s a very star-wars-y way of telling stories, with new events “rhyming” with the old.

Microtransactions aside, Shadow of War is shaping up to be a great game that will be doing some interesting things with the lore.

“Exploring the intersections” of the lore with good gameplay is a pretty great way of looking at adaptations in general, it makes me happy to hear them talk about this process frankly, and about their priorities with the new lore.

Just in case you thought I was kidding – here’s the heraldry for the Mordor Special Mission Flying Corps, drawn by Tolkien himself.

“It apparently was a badge that applied to Sauron’s air-borne troops, probably including the later incarnations of the Nazgûl and, perhaps, any remaining dragons under Sauron’s command. The “wings” at the side of the emblem are given a feather-like texture, which might indicate that they were originally real wings. A mystifying scribble, saying “Seen from below”, actually hints that the emblem portrays one of Sauron’s flying creatures, and the small “horns” indicated between the wings and the body of the creature could then be the feet of someone riding the beast. But it is clear that if so, the portrait must be extremely stylized. On the wings can be seen the image of Sauron’s eye, multiplied like the eyes on peacock’s wings.” [x]

This is so undeniably cool.  All I can imagine now is this Nazgul Flying Corps in WW2 outfit.

This is the best thing I’ve ever seen

“His spouse is Uinen, the Lady of the Seas, whose hair lies spread through all waters under sky. All creatures she loves that live in the salt streams, and all weeds that grow there; to her mariners cry, for she can lay calm upon the waves, restraining the wildness of Ossë. The Númenóreans lived long in her protection, and held her in reverence equal to the Valar.”

If the dragons are your children, are you the Father ofDragons?

Father AND Mother! On a case-by-case basis!

You are the Mother of Dragons, you take what is yours with fire and blood, you have a hopelessly infatuated right hand and you’re probably oblivious, you have a really derpy expression that’s famous…

Well, there’s no denying the first two, but it’s hard to be oblivious to my “Right Hand’s” affection when I encourage him to nail me to his anvil on a regular basis–

– and DERPY? How DARE you, I am the very PICTURE of dignity! an ICON of MAJESTY!

I’ve certainly never screamed at a spider or had a door slammed in my face or hid under a table when Tulkas was around!

replied to your post “Hey, what are you calling your Finrod/Thû AU one-shot”

1. is this for real? 2. can i read it

1) Oh it’s real, it’s happening

2) You know that thing that happens sometimes, when you’re all set to sit down and write some good ol’ fashioned, wholesome werewolf dicking, and then 17 pages in you’re still like “okay but what plot elements… what are the necessary character motivations needed to get him to the werewolf dick?”  …That’s where we’re at right now
