I’m the Spirit that denieth
All things, always– stars or flowers;
That by sneers and strife supplieth
Cause to vex the Heavenly powers.
I’m for Naught; and for creation: Ruin, death!
My life my breath, my breath, is what they call transgression, sin and death!
Shouting and laughing out this word I throw: “No!”
Wasting and hissing, on I go: “No!”
Slandering soiling, howling hissing, on I go– Whistling, whistling whistling whistling!
You guys, the wizard duel between Finrod and Thû is one of my favorite scenes in the whole legendarium, I love it so, so much. :’)
This picture was a WIP in my art folder for a year and while I always meant to finish it, I didn’t plan on spending as much time on it as I did. It’s still super rough, and I may revisit it again sometime in the future when I’m inspired, but for now I’ve gotta move on. XD
“…And Huan released [Sauron]. And immediately he took the form of a vampire, great as a dark cloud across the moon, and he fled, dripping blood from his throat upon the trees, and came to Taur-nu-Fuin and dwelt there, filing it with horror.”
“…Within the shadow of the gate he saw the Two Watchers. They were like great figures seated upon thrones. Each had three joined bodies, and three heads facing outward, and inward, and across the gateway. The heads had vulture-faces, and on their great knees were laid claw-like hands. They seemed to be carved out of huge blocks of stone, immovable, and yet they were aware: some dreadful spirit of evil vigilance abode in them. They knew and enemy.” –The Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien
I took a few artistic liberties with the statues (largely because I didn’t have the description in front of me…whoops) and cheated a bit at the end, but at least I got the idea on paper! I was excited when I came across this passage in my re-read because I’d already done one drawing with Sauron featuring a chimera/griffin motif using Mesopotamian and Mediterranean influences, and the description conjured an immediate visual of some of my favorite mythological beastie statues. 🙂 They were very fun to paint, and I spent far too long on them.
Good ol’ Ungles. For my purposes she’s going to have several forms to choose from, ranging from “Vaguely Humanoid” to “Garage-Sized Death Spider” to “A Vast Screaming Tear In Reality, A Maw Which Opens Into The Void With A Thousand Hungry Eyes, The Devourer of Suns.” She likes to keep it fresh.
I’be been really bad at uploading any art this month, so while its not done have this WIP (its all I’m good for anyway^^’) (havn’t added the teeth yet, in case there was anyone wondering)
