Novae Theoricae Planetarum– moving volvelle

“Diagrams, many with moving parts, designed to accompany the work Theoricae Novae Planetarum by 15th-century Austrian astronomer Georg von Peurbach, who taught at the universities in Padua and Ferrara. The diagrams demonstrate increasingly complex planetary motion. An early 17th-century inscription on the first flyleaf refers to an edition of Peurbach published in Venice in 1616.”

Feathered Fell Beast– R.Wesley Nipper 2018

I wanted to do a more detailed and nice looking study BUT OH BOY DO I ABSOLUTELY NOT HAVE THE TIME so instead I’m just going to drop all my visual headcanons here in one post so I don’t forget them later.

  • They Are As Follows:

1) SEXY MESOPOTAMIAN/MEDITERRANEAN  GRIFFINS FROM THE BRONZE AGE – in keeping with my Babylonian Mordor aesthetic

2) WHAT IF the fell beasts the Nazgul ride are like the hairless-sphinx cats of the griffin world? WHAT IF THEY USED TO HAVE FEATHERS, OR SOME OF THEM STILL HAVE FEATHERS, OR MAYBE I JUST FORGOT THAT THE FELLBEASTS ARE CANONICALLY NAKED???  Who among us is to say.*

* I forgot I absolutely forgot but now I want to do the hairless skinbeast version of this picture very very badly

3) PEACOCKS.

4) but

5) BLACK LIKE HOW THAT ONE CHICKEN DO, YOU KNOW, THE ONE

–Werewolves, weregild, wizards, and weaponized ballads!

I intended to post this on Halloween but circumstances did not permit. This is the first chapter of an ongoing work, intended to be more of a retelling of my absolute favorite scene in the Lay of Leithian (possibly my favorite scene in the whole legendarium), and can be read as a stand-alone work if you’re not into all that shipping business 🙂 Enjoy!   ~Wes

Oromë and Nahar

So, I’ve been playing around with the concept that the Ainur really didn’t know a whole lot about the appearance of the Children of Ilúvatar outside what they glimpsed in the Music, as evidenced when Aulë created the dwarves. Reminiscent of a human/elven design, but not quite… accurate. Well, at least not completely accurate. As such, I like to imagine that in baited anticipation of the Children, each Ainur took on the shape of what they personally believed the Children would be like–influenced by their own interests and perspective. This is why the elves were so afraid of Oromë when they first met. It wasn’t just Morgoth torturing the elves and making them afraid of the Ainur, or the Ainur being giant god-like creatures. It was probably also because the Ainur didn’t have a full grasp on human/elven appearance, and the elves were like “Nope Nope Nope”
