Haleth for the character meme?

  • What I like about them

Is there literally anything not to like about Haleth? She reminds me of some of the badass ladies from Czech mythology, like Libuše or Vlasta. 

  • What I dislike about them

Like many of Tolkien’s characters, she’s in and out of the narrative before we can learn very much about her. 😦

Also, in terms of how the fandom portrays her, I don’t go in for young, willowy, smudged-eyeliner interpretations of Haleth. I prefer her to be older and a little harder worn.

Well, her turning Caranthir down flat and living on her own terms in elven territory comes to mind…

Does killing a metric shit ton of orcs count? NAAAHHH, the orcs were prolly just like “eh, that’s fair.” I mean if anyone can appreciate a viciously independent warrior queen it’s orcs. Probably.  

  • A situation with this character that I want to see explored more

OKAY WELL, PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING, but I’m a sucker for battle scenarios though, so maybe the point at which the Haladin first arrive in Thargelion, thinking perhaps they’ve outrun whatever horrors are chasing them now that they’re in elf-protected lands, only to discover that the new country is not safe at all. I’d like to see Haleth having to take command in the field directly after her father died, keeping her people alive in increasingly desperate straights until backup arrives.

Also, total timeline fuckery aside, her meeting Turin would be kinda cool.

I don’t have one for her, and I don’t think she had one for her either.

I can see her taking lovers or even long-term partners without ever marrying them or having kids. But also, I think by the time she becomes the Halad, she’s probably pretty settled in to the whole Single Matriarch lifestyle and isn’t looking for romantic companionship.

For the character meme: Celebrimbor and Luthien

Already did Celebrimbor, so here’s Luthien!

  • What I like about them
    SURPRISE I actually really, really like Luthien.
    She’s kind of just this awesome epic hero who is there to kick ass and get her boyfriend back, and to me it seems like there’s less stress put on her moral coding, or whatever— like, her successes don’t feel like they’re attributed to her virtue so much as her badassery? 

    She’s actually capable of subterfuge! Which leads to success, as opposed to the 99.9% failure rate of all the more noble and glorious charges against Angband! Despite being able to lie and dress up like a vampire and make Thû piss himself, she’s completely adorable??? 

    Also in they Lay of Leithian, she’s very sweet to Carcharoth when she puts him to sleep. ;w; That wins points with me so hard. NO ONE IS EVER NICE TO THE FORCES OF DARKNESS.

    Her description as the “fairest”. I roll my eyes at thee, descriptor.

    Yo, she fucking reads Sauron for filth and then knocks Melkor out, that shit is intense. 
  • Least favourite moment
    I don’t really like how she kind of disappears from the narrative as soon as the Silmaril is recaptured? 
  • A situation with this character that I want to see explored more
    Oh you know, her actual thoughts and feelings on stuff— you know, that thing we barely get for any of the characters in Tolkien. 
  • An interesting AU for this character
    Anything Dark Luthien!! *w* But also, anything where she gets to have more interaction with Team Angband? 

    Aaaand I guess my headcanon that she personally fought and took Thuringwethil’s wings is actually an AU….  >v>;

    I am all for Luthien/Thuringwethil. I actually have a thing I’d like to write/draw for them someday… SOMEDAY.

    I kind of… guilty-ship her and Melkor in some scenarios? MEGA-guilty ship her with Celegorm in some others???? (don’t look at meAHAHAHAi’mtrash)

    -Luthien is aaaalllllll about that bass. ❤

    -I have some fairly complex headcanons about Maiar and how they are able to distribute their powers, which helps to account for things like Huan being able to beat Thû and Luthien being able to put a Vala to sleep.
    Basically, it’s just a matter of putting points into the right stats? XD Like, Sauron, who is described as being one of (if not THE most) powerful Maiar, had a lot of points to begin with, and distributed them pretty evenly across all his stats. But a smaller Maia, like Huan, could take a shape and just PUT EVERYTHING THEY GOT into ONE category and come out superior in that element.
     My theory is that Huan was a Maia or Oromë who had some grievance with Sauron in the Spring of Arda that led him to take a shape into which he basically poured all of his points into a specific destiny, which was to kick Sauron’s ass at some future date. He gave up changing shape and even speaking (more than three times, anyway) for the sake of being able to do this one thing. Luthien is similar, in that she’s got only half of Melian’s power, but it’s ALL put into the Songs and Illusions category— and Song magic is powerful stuff, as we know! The fabric of Arda is music-based, so she’s got a very versatile and potent ability at her disposal. (It may also be that her shortened lifespan had something to do with the distribution of her power.) 

MAEDHROS IT IS THEN!

  • What I like about them
     The whole character arc, actually! Specifically how much his personality must have changed from being a prince in Valinor to the one-handed vengeance-machine in Beleriand. 
  • What I dislike about them
    The Second Kinslaying, and maybe how far into bitterness and desperation he falls at the end of the First Age? It’s not that I dislike this about him necessarily, I just find it quite depressing? 
  • Favourite moment
    I quite like the bit where he’s like “haha totally going to double-cross Morgoth” and Morgoth is like “son… don’t bullshit a bullshitter." 
    Okay but that aside: Literally any interaction with the Nolofinweans and also Maedhros and the Khazad. Like, the Union of Maedhros was completely and utterly badass and brilliant and it gets me pumped up every time I read it despite being the Dark Lord Trash that I am.
  • Least favourite moment
    Lololol I generally get my panties in a twist every time ANY of the Noldor makes the excuse that any land not claimed by the Sindar is theirs and that the Sindar owe them the territory they DO still have, because "we’re protecting you from Morgoth”. And Maedhros is like the first one to say “well I guess we’ll just take all the land you’re NOT in, Thingol, smd” and that’s never sat well with me. XD I MEAN, I LIKE IT AS A CHARACTER DYNAMIC! I ENJOY CHARACTER CONFLICT. I ENJOY THAT THE NOLDOR ROLL INTO BELERIAND LIKE WHAT UP I GOTTA BIG CROWN. 
    I JUST ALSO STAN WITH THE SINDAR ON A PERSONA LEVEL I mean I don’t think Thingol is sterling example of morality or anything– NO ONE IS IN THIS BOOK I S2G, I just… it’s a very colonialist attitude and it raises my hackles even while it intrigues me, and even while I can see where the attitude originated and how it seems totally reasonable from the Noldor’s perspective. 
  • A situation with this character that I want to see explored more
    Ech, you know me! I like all the in-between moments of life during wartime to be explored, and POLITICS *q*
  • An interesting AU for this character
    I……… I want to see the complete HOT MESS of an AU that would be Maedhros successfully making parley with Melkor. 
  • OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship)
    I really enjoy Maedhros/Fingon, it’s hot as fuck and it breaks my heart–BUT I also don’t really have a real OTP for Maedhros? I think that the kind of relationship he’d need to make a really compelling OTP for my tastes doesn’t necessarily exist in the Silm? Or if it does, it has yet to be explored.

    I think there’s a lot of good BROTPs for Maedhros! 😀 Azaghal comes to mind as one I think I’d really like to explore. But in general I think he’d be well respected amongst his political allies.

    *shrug* I don’t actively go searching out NOTPs so I don’t know? XD  AGAIN, as with most things, the things that squick me tend to be interpretations that I disagree with. 
    Why do so many people feel the need to draw all the elves as same-faced 18-year-old perfectly symmetrical white bishounen with slightly different hair? Why is that appealing? Who finds that hot? ASKING THIS FOR REAL LIKE I GENUINELY DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

    I’ve made posts about this before, but my HC version of Maedhros has a form of acromegaly or gigantism. I like to think of him as having very striking features that are not unattractive, but do not actually fall within the standard elven parameters for being classically handsome? 
    I also think that Feanor and Nerdanel are outrageously proud of their firstborn, and if anyone suggested to them that Maedhros was slightly non-standard or not a statuesque model of Noldor manhood, they would FREEZE THAT PERSON’S SOUL WITH THEIR EYES. Also Fëanor comes to like… just under Maedhros’s shoulder height. U////U SHORT DAD HUGS.

    I DIG ANY VERSION OF MAEDHROS THAT IS SCARRED AND HAS DIFFERENT HAIR AFTER THANGORODRIM. I DIG THAT SO HARD. I tend to draw him with long braided hair no matter what, but whenever I see a version (eehn’s comes to mind) where he’s cut his hair short–!!!! GREY STREAKS FROM STRESS???? *__* HNNNNGH. 

    Generally speaking, the more of a crusty old badass you make Maedhros, the more I like him. >3> And as I said before, I really just enjoy speculating about the character’s entire arc from beginning to end and seeing the changes that happen between each epoch of his life.

  • What I dislike about them
    This is probably cheating but there’s a lot of fanon about Celebrimbor that I don’t enjoy or track with? I think that’s the complaint about MOST fanon, aahah- just like, over-simplifying the character and his circumstances, either painting him as a naive innocent baby or all about the martyred man-pain, or whatever. I also don’t jive with making him a sweet-faced 18-year-old.

    Okay well there’s that H.O.M.E. version where he has this unrequited crush on Galadriel which just…. *eye rolls into oblivion*

    As much as I love his relationship with Annatar, I always like seeing fics or HCs about his work and life in Eregion outside of the ring-making. 🙂

    ALSO LORD ALL THAT TIME -BEFORE- EREGION. LIke…. I hardly ever see his history in Beleriand or before discussed! ;o;

    *cough* well I have that one modern/reincarnation Angbang AU that features a reincarnated Tyelpe as a skinny-jeans wearing, pickup-driving, acoustic-guitar-playing Navajo folk rockstar/ environmentalist/ first nations activist/engineer living in a sustainable zero-carbon-footprint dwelling that he designed and constructed himself in the desert, while working from his laptop to engineer stuff like super efficient jet-fuel made from banana peels and stuff….
