I’ve heard that amongst humans there is a superstition that if you spill rice or lentils or such like before a devil, he will be irresistibly compelled to count them all, unable to stop until he’s finished.Â
FAP* (*Fractal Addiction Phenomenon) seems to only occur in Maiar who have been victimized by my blog some natural inclination towards structure and geometry, or a preoccupation with higher mathematics.Â
Eonwë is not affected by FAP; at least, not the way Sauron is. He might be slightly more engaged by wind patterns and cloud formations than the average Maia, but natural geometry and fractals are just signs to him of Eru’s perfect harmony manifesting in every strata of creation. They do not cause FAP.
The closest he’d get to being overcome by FAP would be if he meditated too long on the immaculate design of the universe and accidentally disembodied or lost track of time for a few years– a similar outcome to someone with FAP, but not caused by external means. In other words, you probably couldn’t just plop an impossible manifestation of infinity in his lap and have him bliss out for the entire Mesozoic–Â
–that response is limited solely to Maiar who are unfortunate enough to come into contact with the demons that keep this headcanon alive.Â
That’s it, I’m putting out the traps. …Have you lot been eating prisoners in the lower caverns? That’s how we get Void-born Abominations, I’ve told you a hundred times!
Do you know what happens if you step in one of those webs? I start having to recruit new Maiar, that’s what happens. I’m not going to say it again!Â
If I see one more fractal mess luring my sweet smith into a long slide into the maw of darkness, there will be hell to pay.Â
–YOU HEAR THAT, YOU STYGIAN NUISANCE? NOT ON MY WATCH!Â
That’s a lovely little sierpinski pyramid you’ve made, my dear. But even a fully fledged Maia would find it beyond them to make it infinitely replicating, even if the laws of matter permitted such a thing.Â
…It will make a charming bauble for an earring, perhaps.Â
All my fractal-related headcanons are under the #Fractal Basilisk tag. (THE DEADLY. Fractal basilisk tag.)Â
I mean… it’s 90% crack, but it has a couple of roots in actual headcanon theories? XD
Fractal hypnosis is mostly relevant to the mathematically/geometrically inclined Maiar (Langon is susceptible to ice fractals. He can go to rehab with Sauron.)Â
Something in the Maiar programming for completing tasks, as well as identifying substances related to their origin, makes them want to track the iterations of the fractal until they find the end. But it just keeps going! AHAHA WOW THERE IT GOES AGAIN JUST LIKE THE LAST 1,000,000,000 times! I wonder what it’ll do next!  …AMAZING!
I figure it’s both relaxing and stimulating and it engages 100% of their CPU. A fractally-susceptible maia will just kind of freeze up and blue screen until something snaps them out of it. Hence, “catnip”, because of the incapacitating effect on the senses. Â
I don’t think Valar are affected by fractals at all, simply because they’re that much more familiar with the properties of Infinity.
“And this habitation might seem a little thing to those who consider only the majesty of the Ainur, and not their terrible sharpness; as who should take the whole field of Arda for the foundation of a pillar and so raise it until the cone of its summit were more bitter than a needle; or who consider only the immeasurable vastness of the World, which still the Ainur are shaping, and not the minute precision to which they shape all things therein.”
Melkor probably CAN see the entirety of the fractal down to subatomic particles, and just doesn’t care. Like, “PFFFF, infinity-schminity. Why do you think I came back from exploring the Outer Dark? You think I’d still be here if there was something cooler happening anywhere else in creation? Also hey, guess what’s more interesting than math: ME.”Â
Then again consider the Noldor developing shape-memory alloys in Beleriand with two way memory effects so to safely transport keys/signets. (Two way memory effect means, very roughly, that the object in question, if heated to a certain temperature, can configure itself in a different shape while remembering some elements of the previous shape, all such effects are lost if the object is heated too much because then its configuration just changes its phase and the crystalline structure itself changes ).
Thus bringing us to Noldor knowing full well how to use electrolysis, Noldor having developed the technology to use galvanic and electrolytic cells.
A “magnetic trap” keeping the silmarilli safe and Ungoliant using her spider-form to “weave” field lines out of the way.
please keep your magnets far, far away from Sauron; he has enough trouble with fractals
