Need Help to Find Lost Fic!

I absolutely love the incredible variety of Tolkien fan
fiction that is out there. Some stories will stick into my mind and I want to
go back and revisit them. There’s one story that I am almost obsessed with
finding again but can’t. Searched my bookmarks and histories on the various fan
fiction sites to no avail. Google Search was pretty much worthless.

Here’s the gist from what I remember:

Thranduil is a young child. He’s interested in knowing more
about the “spirit/guardian of the forge” (AKA Mairon) but no one will talk
about it. There are no shrines to the forger. He sneaks off into the wood/cave
and creates a little shrine and says a “prayer.” Mairon / Sauron hears it and,
intrigued because no one has ever done that for him, visits Thranduil in the
cave as a spirit/ghost. They have an interesting dialogue and Sauron asks if
Thranduil would like a gift in exchange for his offering. I recall one of the
potential gifts being something along the lines of, “perhaps I might spare your
life one day on the field of battle.” Before anything else can happen, Sauron
senses Thranduil’s father coming and disappears.

I thought it was a lovely story. Kudos to the author. Please respond if you can identify this (author/title, etc.)
Thanks so much.
