Maeglin Outfit Concepts– RivkaZ 2016

Some spoopy courtly outfit designs in preparation for an upcoming project! I think #5 is my winner for this round… 

 I’ve whined about drawing Maeglin before on this blog; he’s really hard for me to put on paper because I instinctively want to do something more complex and less generic than the version in my head (who looks like Kylo Ren and Sasuke and 8 Hot Topic employees rolled into one being), but the more I deviate from the original template, the less he feels like Maeglin to me.  So I may just… stop fighting the tide and see where that design takes me, and what quirks it develops on its own.

Is it just me, or is Turgon really the only character who honestly LIKES Maeglin without any ulterior motives whatsoever? I mean there are mentions of Maeglin having political allies, even people who followed him into betrayal, and he’s said to be a charismatic speaker, but Turgon is the only one who is mentioned (specifically and by name) to like him on a personal level, repeatedly.

Which, you know, is kind of heartbreaking, considering.

Yep. Besides from Aredhel (who seems to have sincerely liked her son on top of loving him, even going beyond the fact that she sacrificed her life for him), Turgon seems to be the only person who is remarked upon as liking Maeglin and not simply intending to use him.

#Turgon: a genuinely nice guy  #Which only makes the inevitable torture-motivated betrayal even worse  #Of course I wonder if Maeglin got so used to people either disliking and distrusting him  #Or pretending to like him only so they could use him to their own advantage  #(Which since he’s characterized as being able ‘to see into people’s hearts and minds’ he’d pick up on pretty quickly)  #That he just assumed that Turgon couldn’t possibly like him just because he liked him  #That Turgon couldn’t possibly care for him just because he cared for him  #When Turgon declared Earendil his heir it was probably just confirmation to Maeglin  #That Turgon had been using him  #Just like everyone else  #And that when he was no longer the only option for heir  #He was immediately downgraded  #And Maeglin assumed that that was the only importance he’d ever been of to Turgon in the first place  #So suddenly he’s not important anymore and Turgon doesn’t value him anymore (or so he thinks)  #So when Morgoth starts working on him he’s got a lot to work WITH (x)

It didn’t occur to me until a relevant gift was given to me last night by my sister, but imagine a mint. Like, a coin mint.

…. in didn’t remember where I was going with this but I think general idea was oh hey Maeglin’s skill in metallurgy could mean he could work at a mint to devise the precise compound for coinage. Or is actually pressing the coins himself. Idk. I’ve got a reckless and irresponsible imagination.

  • Totally cool with incest
  • Will trade an entire city for sex
  • Dubious honor of being No. 1 traitor
  • Dad was a dick

The elf was cursing, but ceased to tremble as Sauron pushed him against the wall to keep him from pacing away in howling, pained fury.

Maeglin heaved for breath and scrabbled to pull away the burned and smoking fabric away from his chest and collarbones. But Sauron just pushed his hands away with significant applications of strength and tore away the fabric easily.

The spray of water-like metal that splashed out of the mold when he tipped the bowl had come up and arced rather beautifully like a fountain, but landed on the elf. He’d flinched and turned his face away in time, but the molten aluminum was doing its damage and already forming welts on his sparsely-scarred, pale skin.

“What are you doing?!” Maeglin hissed, watching Sauron crane his head downwards to his bared skin. “It’s still burning!”

But he understood after he pressed his lips to the burns. The elf sighed with relief and relaxed against the wall as each one ceased to scald and burn into his flesh. Unless Sauron was a healer, scars would remain but those he could carry with a measure of pride.
