Justify? Pssst, justification is for lesser beings! They are above all that, they are The Dark Lord(s)! And Elven Wraiths! And Sexy Spider-Ladies! And Multiple The One Rings! Helm Hammerhand is one of the Nine! Isildur is a Wraith! Next thing – Ar-Pharazon is not dead, he’s a barista in his own chain of coffee shops on the border between Gondor and Mordor!
I would read that fic a hundred times happily before I read a single sentence more of canon-thumping screed from a Tolkien fan who thought they were literally the only Tolkien fan who’d ever thought that adapting the good professor’s work was outrageous and then mentioned something about him spinning in his grave.
I’m so curious as to how SoM:SoW is going to justify making Isildur a wraith; why and how would he be enslaved after death? And why, however it happens, would he not just tell Sauron things like “welp, this is the spot where I died, probably that’s where the Ring went”.
At this point in these games, does anything have any logical reasoning behind it?
yes! At least, I think so? XD They’re choosing from among the available Notable Dead Humans in the trilogy who might have sufficiently wraithy motivations to be enthralled by (usually vengeance). The in-game ‘headcanon’ they mentioned was that Isildur’s body was never found, and given his connection with the One Ring, his was a personal revenge case for Sauron. Presumably he was forcibly wraithified, they didn’t say HOW he was wraithified (by ring or by necromancy or blood sacrifice similar to Talion’s, or what have you).
XD My default position for SoM is one of EXTREME LENIENCE because damn if they aren’t doing the best they can with those insane copyright restrictions in place. I’m just curious if they’re going to close some of the obvious loopholes, or if they’re just going to tell us to roll with it because it’s a cool call-back.

There’s a very interesting angle to the use of Shelob in Shadow of War. In addition to making her spirit able to see “the web of fate” like a more honest, if evil, Galadriel, her story seems to echo that of Ungoliant. Just like she craved the light of the Silmarils made by Celebrimbor’s grandfather, so too does Shelob hunger for the light of this new Ring.
These half-retellings of old stories abound in the adaptations of Tolkien’s work. Thranduil’s story in the Hobbit films echoes that of Thingol’s obsession with the Nauglamir. The new Shadow of War uses the Nazgul Suladân as a stand-in for Ar-Pharazon and how he took Sauron captive and fell to his seduction.
It’s a very star-wars-y way of telling stories, with new events “rhyming” with the old.
Microtransactions aside, Shadow of War is shaping up to be a great game that will be doing some interesting things with the lore.
“Exploring the intersections” of the lore with good gameplay is a pretty great way of looking at adaptations in general, it makes me happy to hear them talk about this process frankly, and about their priorities with the new lore.
The Mordor Civil Rights Under-Overlordiat would like to remind all new subjects of Uruk and comparable intelligence that, while not explicitly forbidden, husbandry with toy-breed animals is discouraged under the laws of the Dark Lord – praise yet never speak His name.
While toy-breeds are deemed unethical due to the process and practices relating to their creation and their precarious health, they also represent an arguable violation of the Warg Rights Act of TA 1780 that grants full citizenship and equal rights to all Great Wolves and related species.
Our canine compatriots deserve the right to serve the Dark Lord – may He rule eternal – as equals, not pets.

As part of a brand-new cross-species results-focused public outreach initiative, the Mordor Housing Overlordiat is proud to unveil a buddy program wherein inviting an Uruk, Olog, Goblin or Warg friend to live with you in newly-signed-over territories of the Dark Lord – hallowed and grateful are we who live under His gaze – will incur a 20% decrease in your expected tithe offerings and will allow you the right to spare your firstborn from mandatory army conscription.
We look forward to the new community-building endeavors and strong interpersonal relationships this outreach is sure to generate. If you have a need of further assistance or questions, please inquire at your local thrallmaster for information regarding this and other opportunities.*

If Celebrimbor makes another Ring of Power in Shadow of War does that downgrade Sauron’s ring to The Other Ring?
The inscription is blue, á la Shadow of Mordor, because Ossë’s new job as a Pumpkin Spice Pedlar gives them an in with the local Deals Warlock in charge of magic mall swag.
This is my first ever ring of power! I’m excited to be your new Bright Lord ❤ Don’t tell Tyelpe
Edit: Best part

Yessss, this may be my favorite new button design that I vectored~ I’ll be interested to see how many people actually recognize it lol (but I really don’t care, I sort of just wanted to make one for me XD)Ratbag was a surprisingly good character, totally wasn’t expecting it~
YUSSSSSSS Second and Third Age God-King of Harad and Mordor Sauron is my favorite :’D
The amount of mutual monument effacing that goes on between Mordor and Gondor must be ridiculous. XD
if you ever wonder why Sauron was obsessed with Celebrimbor, give this a listen.
