Happy Birthday for me- here is a new song for y’all. It’s a super rough version of an original setting of another J. R. R. Tolkien poem someone asked me to do. Like Kortirion Among the Trees, it’s incredibly long and wordy and the number of lines in each stanza changes, so it sort of stumbles in places- sorry!

Kulning – Gjallarhorn

a form of song used in some provinces in Norway and northern Sweden, primarily by women, to communicate to each other and to call livestock down from high-mountain pastures. kulning can belong to families, who have their own tones and melodies, and are passed down from relative to relative– the animals of families can recognize these calls and respond to them, and often the bells they wear are tuned to the kulning itself, making it easy to hear them coming down the mountainside and distinguish which homestead they belong to. 

i first heard this type of music on a livestream and i have been captivated ever since. i thought it was a beautiful and perfect example about how music is integral to our lives and how it runs through every part of our history and is used in every way for almost any and every purpose.

For people who are actually interested in how viking music might have sounded, “Drømde mik en drøm i nat“ (/I dreamt a dream last night) is the earliest music (and lyrics) known in Scandinavia preserved on the last page of the (~1200-1300) Codex Runicus as rune notes.

The song and melody is still known and used today in most of Scandinavia, as a sort of folk-standard. This version, deceivingly slow in the beginning, is presented as close to the original sound of the years 900-1000 as historians think they can come.

This song might have survived because it was a gigantic hit, like the viking’s very own “Billie Jean”. A total pop slayer that stayed around long enough for music notes to be invented.

So here’s setting I finally got around to after someone suggested it a few months ago. I know that this is probably poem that my voice is less suited to than most of the other poems because of the darkness and fury in it, but I had a go anyways. Hope I did it at least some justice. Also – drop D tuning! Ahhh!
