We’re coming up on a new year, and I have RESOLUTIONS:

I’ve been reluctant to promote myself as much as I could be doing because as an artist with clinical depression, I am painfully aware of my own failings when it comes to keeping on a schedule and reliably fulfilling my commitments. But! I’m also happy to say that I’ve made some significant progress managing my illness and my personal life, and I am going to make an effort to get my scripting and comic-making on with some reasonable consistency. 

–I want to reach out more to my patrons and expand my audience, and get small pledges from more people. 

To encourage this, I’ve switched up my rewards so that for $7 a month, you now get access to all my time-lapse videos, process gifs, and sketches– I may take requests for art tutorials if that is something people are interested in. 🙂

At the $25 tier I now offer monthly sketch commissions– something I was hesitant to do before for all the reasons above. I’m following some amazing artists who have inspired me to take a shot at this. There are limited openings for this one, so if you’re interested, consider grabbing one sooner rather than later. 

And of course, at $1 reward still gets you access to aaallll my high-res bonus art, comic pages, transparent assets, and early updates on whatever I’m working on! Honestly, I’m thrilled if you can give even this much a month, you’re a treasure. ( ˘ ³˘)

After the Fall

Having survived the fall of Gondolin, Maeglin pulls some strings with management to secure the freedom of his friend Salgant. They are both put to work in the Great Forge of Angband, under the supervision of Sauron himself. Salgant learns a trade, he and Maeglin both come to terms with the changing future of Beleriand, Sauron waxes hopeful about the end of the war, and healing happens in unlikely places.

Revenge isn’t nearly as sweet as candied chestnuts.

This was a fic I posted on the Silmarillion Writer’s Guild in 2016. It was a long time in the writing, and it is one of my favorites. I am posting it again after extensive editing and reworking, so if you liked it before, I encourage you to reread it now in its polished state. And if it’s new to you, enjoy! 🙂

Celebrimbor, lord of Eregion, ignores the advice of his peers and welcomes a stranger into his city who promises to teach him techniques in smithing that will grant power over time and entropy. He learns many things from his new teacher that he was not prepared for.

The rest is history: Beware of Maiar bearing gifts.

YES!  I stumbled across a blurb on this a while back, and I’m thrilled: a bona fide botanist has addressed the plants of JRR Tolkien’s subcreation.  Not sure why the journalist remarks that this tests the limits of The Lord of the Rings fandom.

“I told him, ‘Absolutely not’,” she declared. “The women of the world are not for sale.”

Tragic hero, Kullervo, and Tolkien’s career

Ringer-friend Sampo alerted us to this well-done and informative article, published by Finnish Broadcasting Company, about how J.R.R. Tolkien’s career started thanks, in large-part, to his interest in the tragic Finnish hero, Kullervo. “When J. R. R. Tolkien, the father of Hobbits and fantasy literature, was in his twenties, he took a keen interest in the Finnish epic poem Kalevala. So much so that he wanted to rewrite the story of Kullervo. Now, this early work of his has finally been published.”

The article goes on to compare and contrast the various characteristics of Tolkien’s Kullervo with the Kullervo of the Kalevala. A delightful aspect of the article is that it contains bits and bobs of Tolkien quotes such as: “The gem of my attempt to write legends of my own to fit my private languages was the tragic tale of the hapless Kullervo in the FinnishKelevala.” Another great quote, of reading about Finnish grammar: “It was like discovering a complete wine-cellar filled with bottles of amazing wine of a kind and flavour never tasted before.”
