Anguirel Design V2– RivkaZ 2016

Re-uploading this because the in the original I had a silly flange on the end of the blade that I have since removed. I also called it a ‘bastard sword’/’hand-and-a-half sword’, instead of a great sword, which is more accurate. (I confused the technique ‘half-handing’ with the hand-and-a-half sword type. Whoop!)

More Gondolin reference stuff.

I needed to make a sword that matched with my Eöl’s Gothic sensibilities, was mean and lean enough to be the twin of Anglachel/Gurthang, AND looked like it was inspired by dwarven craftsmanship.

I chose a great sword for the design after seeing some truly elegant videos of longsword techniques in use. It’s appealing to me to think of Maeglin using a big mofo of a sword with surgical finesse.

*tfw a popular blog reblogs your art, but it’s the version before you fixed the description and edited the picture, so now you’ve got 20+ reblogs of misinformation and a design glitch spreading slowly across tumblr*

dwimmerlaiks:

– feanor trying to hug all his children at once

– little idril taking her father’s larger hands in her own during the passing of the helcaraxe, trying to warm them for him

– awkward hugs between feanor and young fingolfin

– aredhel leaning in slowly and deliberately towards celegorm, looking him deep in the eyes, and when he closes his she quickly kisses his cheek and runs away laughing

– maglor braiding his brother’s hair for him during his recovery

– turgon closing his father’s eyes after thorondor brings him his body

– elrond and elro’s last embrace before he leaves for numenor

– fingon and maehdros doing the forehead touching thing the last time they see each other before nirnaeth

so elves are impervious to disease and sickness and resistant to infection but do they

have

allergies

…asking for entirely scientific reasons and definitely not because i think it would be hilarious if tensions were high between caranthir and celegorm because celegorm spends his days rolling around in pollen and dog dander and caranthir is allergic to both these things, certainly not because what if when the hosts of fingolfin land in Beleriand and  flowers spring up under their feet, the first thing finrod and turgon do is start sneezing.

//heyhey dropping in from the Void to say sorry to those of you who have been waiting for replies or waiting to chat with me– i’ve just been low on spoons so I’m trying to conserve my energy. The muses have been kinda quiet lately, which isn’t surprising considering every spare scrap of energy I’ve had has been channeled into painting! XD

Anyway, aside from a few crappy health days, I’m doing fine. Sorry for the long silence! I’ll be back soon 🙂

Appearing like trenches dragged into the earth, sunken lanes,
also called hollow-ways or holloways, are centuries-old thoroughfares
worn down by the traffic of time. They’re one of the few examples of
human-made infrastructure still serving its original purpose, although
many who walk through holloways don’t realize they’re retracing
ancient steps.

“But Uinen wept for the mariners of the Teleri; and the sea rose in wrath against the slayers, so that many of the ships were wrecked and those in them drowned.”

–Of the Flight of The Noldor, The Silmarillion

This is something I wanted to draw for a long, long time. Uinen is the best Ainur ever.

I’m quite pleased with how this came out!

The logistics of the War of Wrath are pretty interesting if you think about them. I was wondering about what exactly the Teleri were doing for those fifty years besides being very bored when I remembered all those refugees on Balar. I’m not sure if Tolkien states exactly how fast Beleriand sunk but I think it was a gradual process throughout the war rather than all at once at the end. So you’ve got a slowly disappearing island and a lot of people who need somewhere to go but the mainland isn’t a safe place and the Teleri have a lot of room on their ships…

Basically, imagine the Teleri and Edain refugees. Generations of them, living and dying on their ships. Water burial becoming a custom because what else can you do. Tiny grubby kids who love the elves and are loved by them despite both thinking they look kind of strange. Elves visiting Numenor and finding descendants of that kid who wouldn’t get out of the crow’s nest (it was one time, please stop telling that story, Lady Earwen).

As a caver, it’s been my secret little bucket list to go caving in all 50 states and today I can mark California off! To our surprise, we took a last minute detour to hike down into a valley and reach this water filled cave system! The water went well over 7 feet deep, and we had to strip and swim through the tunnel! By far one of the coldest experiences of my life and by far one of the most active and beautiful karst structures I’ve explored! Good job California, you’ve been nothing but wonderful surprises!
