10 Writing Questions

1. What are your current writing goals? God willing, I will finish this fucking comic script before Amazon shits out a Silmarillion Throne of Games series and ruins the SEO of every Tolkien book forever

2. When did you first discover your love of writing? Like June said, it’s great when you first realize holy shit I can cut out the middleman. Also, it was a way to finally, FINALLY inflict all the shit that was happening in my brain on other people.

3. What motivates you to keep writing? The Validation™. It feels like I have a theater full of movie reels in my head playing at all times and I’m not sure where they’re coming from but it frustrates me when no one else can see them. I had to learn to write out of self defense.

Also I just like to get those juicy bits of character writing out there so people can scream at me in tags and I get to drink your tears of loathing and lust *silence of the lambs slurping*

4. How important is worldbuilding for your writing? SO IMPORTANT. I mean, just for me personally, I don’t know if this is a Good Writing Thing or a Bad Writing Thing but it’s definitely one of my Favorite Writing Things, so occasionally I get lost in the weeds, but hey–

I feel like world building in this day and age is an art form in its own right. Sometimes, you don’t need an excuse to write down a really pedantic, tedious detail! Sometimes you just want to share a cool thing you decided was true about the wall sconces In Nargothrond, and some fucking nerd out there is going to really enjoy reading it.

*On a more practical note– I never know when some environmental detail is going to suddenly give me the idea for a major plot development, or viceversa. Part of worldbuilding is the gently-on-topic free association about a story and its setting, which is one of the best ways to trick your subconscious into generating new story points.

5. Pen on paper versus typing? I write too slowly to keep up with the speed of my internal monologue so I’m definitely a typing person– but I tell you what, I’ve really been feeling the benefits of scribbling my structural planning stuff on scrap paper.

I don’t know why this helps me, but I think having something physical to accompany an idea makes it seem more Real, but also somehow easier to cross out or swap around without the changes feeling too finalized. Something like that, anyway. Idk.

God yes, I’m so inspired right now uhhnnnn look at those scribbles

6. Favorite Author? You come into my house, on the day my daughter is to be married, and you ask me this

7. Something you do to get the creative juices flowing to write? Kinda what I was saying above with world building; gentle free association of topics surrounding my characters. Looking at pictures, reading nonfiction articles, or watching youtube videos of related things helps me visualize scenes, contextualize actions or motivations. A particularly satisfying or complete daydream often makes me want to find ways of translating it into words, ESPECIALLY if there was some real crunchy dialogue. Dialogue is my favorite.

8. Do you write better at night, or first thing in the morning? Yo, I’m not even a person in the morning, unless you mean “Oops The Sun Is Up” kind of morning. I still count anything happens before I my brain shuts down from exhaustion as “night”.

9. How do you take your coffee/tea? Whole milk or cream for both, and smidgen of honey for most teas.

10. If you could only live with one season for the rest of your life, what would it be? Big fan of both spring and autumn. Could we vacillate between those two for the whole year? With like a week of vibrant summer that doesn’t outstay its welcome and then like just one month of real yule-y, fairytale-y winter and then straight to spring again without any of the mushy transitional shit.  That wasn’t the question, I’m sorry. I live for variety, I can’t decide.
