pearl-of-lys:

Melkor never thought of himself as evil. He was good. He wanted to bring down the tyranny of Eru Ilúvartar, to create true freedom. The right to create, the right to choose, the right to be… They should belong to one’s self and one’s self alone.

Why couldn’t the Ainur see? Even his brother, Manwë, could not see the value in pure freedom. He was ignorantly content to serve under Ilúvartar’s reign. So he would make them see. It did not matter how much blood stained his hands–it was the blood of fools. No, it was more than that. Their blood would give freedom to the next generations. Even the children could one day receive that gift of freedom. Surely, a few dead kings were nothing compared to that.

And then there was Mairon. There was a spark, a fire behind his eyes and Melkor thought that perhaps this beautiful creature understood. He was so willing to follow Melkor into open rebellion, more so than any other one of his followers. Mairon was willing to disobey him, to challenge him. He had to understand, Melkor told himself. He must.

He was wrong, of course. Mairon did not understand. He did not want to free the world of Eru Ilúvartar, he wanted Melkor to replace him. Melkor did not want to replace Ilúvartar. He did not want to become what he despised. He wanted to be free and to give freedom.

“Do you love me?” Mairon had once asked.

No, he thought. I cannot truly love that which is not free.

One day, Melkor hoped he could answer yes.

I feel like book-Thranduil blushes easily: @elf-and-iron, discuss.

With his noted frequency to high emotion, he just might. Tolkien’s fondness for pale elves and ethereal descriptions makes me think book Thran is porcelain pale, which skintone does tend to lend itself to blushing.

In addition, there’s a noted fondness for wine in Mirkwood. I bet he blushes when he’s drunk, or other situations where his judgement or self-control might be… compromised.

ooooh my godddd drunk-blushing thrandY
